harmadik

Harmadik is a Hungarian word that denotes the ordinal position three in a sequence. It functions as an ordinal numeral and as an adjective before a noun, as in a harmadik nap (the third day). It can also be used substantively to refer to the third item in a known list, for example a harmadik (the third one). The form is created from the cardinal number három (three) with the suffix -dik, following Hungarian vowel harmony.

In ordinary language, harmadik precedes the noun it modifies and agrees with it in number, but Hungarian adjectives do not change for gender. Common usages include counting and ordering, such as the third item, day, or person in a series. For instance, "ez a harmadik megoldás" means this is the third solution. When referencing a specific date or time, it appears in phrases like "a harmadik napon" (on the third day) or "harmadik hét" (the third week).

The term also appears in scientific and mathematical contexts, where it denotes the third element of a dimension or category, as in harmadik dimenzió (the third dimension) or a harmadik helyezés (the third place/finish) in a competition. While not a proper noun, harmadik can function as a nominal phrase when the context already identifies the relevant sequence.
