Haptena is not a widely established term in mainstream biology or immunology. In many uses it may be a misspelling, a regional variant, or a term used in a narrow context. The concepts most closely related to haptena are the biological concepts of haptens and hapten-carrier conjugates.

A hapten is a small molecule that by itself is not immunogenic, meaning it does not provoke an antibody response. However, when a hapten is covalently linked to a larger carrier protein or polysaccharide, the resulting hapten-carrier conjugate can become immunogenic. The immune system can then generate antibodies against the haptenic determinant(s) presented on the carrier.
