Hapnikukilpide, literally “oxygen rings” in Estonian, is a term used to describe cyclic chemical structures that feature oxygen as part of the ring. In English-language chemistry these are commonly known as oxacycles or cyclic ethers; the term can also encompass lactones, which are cyclic esters containing an oxygen atom in the ring.

Structure and classification: Hapnikukilpide are heterocycles with one or more carbon atoms replaced by oxygen. They are often categorized by ring size: three-membered oxiranes (epoxides), four-membered oxetanes, five-membered oxolanes (tetrahydrofurans, THF), and six-membered dioxanes (such as 1,4-dioxane, with two ether oxygens).
