Hankaaminen is a Finnish noun that translates into English as "grinding," "sanding," or "scraping." The term derives from the Finnish verb hankailla, which historically means to rub or polish by friction. In craft, industrial, and everyday contexts hankaaminen refers to the process of modifying a surface by applying abrasive materials.

In woodworking hankaaminen is employed to smooth lumber, remove defects, or prepare boards for finishing. Common tools include sandpaper, sanding discs, and mechanical sanders. The choice of grit, from coarse to very fine, determines the amount of material removed and the final texture. The same basic technique is applied to metalworking, where hankaaminen removes rust, burrs, or scaling and also helps prepare a piece for painting or other surface treatments. Automotive and aerospace industries use precision hankaaminen to achieve required surface tolerances and optical quality. In art and restoration hankaaminen is used to carefully remove layers of varnish or to prepare canvases for repainting.

The process can be manual or mechanized.
