hangelnyel

Hangelnyel is a fictional constructed language (conlang) developed for the Hangel universe. It is presented as the historical lingua franca of the Hangel archipelago, central to cultural identity and inter-island communication. The language features a moderate lexicon and a regular grammar designed to be accessible to readers within the fiction.

Phonology and writing: Hangelnyel has five vowels a e i o u and a compact consonant set: p t k m n s l r h. Syllables are typically (C)(C)V(C). Stress is usually on the penultimate syllable; the language is non-tonal. It uses the Hangel script, an alphabet of 24 letters; most in-universe texts also appear transliterated into the Latin alphabet for learners.

Morphology and syntax: Hangelnyel follows a basic SVO word order. Noun phrases use demonstratives and a definite article; adjectives precede nouns and do not inflect for number or gender. Plural nouns bear a suffix such as -en. Verbs show aspect and mood through affixes rather than shifting tense; there is no conjugation by person. Pronouns distinguish person and number.

Lexicon and dialects: The core lexicon covers everyday terms, with some specialized vocabulary in trade and seafaring. Two widely cited regional varieties—North Hangel and South Hangel—exhibit phonetic shifts and minor lexical differences, while mutual intelligibility remains high.
