Hammasplakissa, often referred to as dental plaque, is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. It is composed primarily of bacteria, saliva, and food particles. These bacteria feed on sugars and starches found in food, producing acids as a byproduct. Over time, this acidic environment can lead to several oral health problems.

The presence of plaque is a primary factor in the development of tooth decay, also known as cavities. The acids produced by plaque bacteria erode the enamel, the hard outer layer of teeth, creating holes. Furthermore, plaque accumulation can irritate the gums, leading to gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease characterized by redness, swelling, and bleeding. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease that can damage the bone supporting the teeth and potentially lead to tooth loss.

Regular and effective oral hygiene practices are crucial for removing plaque. This includes brushing teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily to clean between teeth where brushing cannot reach. Professional dental cleanings by a dentist or hygienist are also important for removing hardened plaque, known as tartar or calculus, which cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. Dietary choices also play a role; reducing the intake of sugary and starchy foods can help limit the food source for plaque-forming bacteria.
