Halvsyklus is a term used in physics and engineering to describe half of a complete cycle of a periodic phenomenon. A cycle represents one full repetition of a pattern, and a halvsyklus encompasses the first or second half of that pattern. The concept is particularly relevant when discussing alternating currents, oscillations, and waves.

In the context of alternating current (AC), a full cycle involves the voltage or current rising from zero to a positive peak, falling back to zero, then decreasing to a negative peak, and finally returning to zero. A halvsyklus would therefore refer to either the positive portion of the wave or the negative portion. For example, in a 60 Hz AC signal, one full cycle occurs 60 times per second, and each halvsyklus lasts for 1/120 of a second.

Similarly, in oscillating systems like a pendulum or a spring-mass system, a full cycle involves the object moving from its equilibrium position to one extreme, back through equilibrium to the other extreme, and finally returning to the equilibrium position. A halvsyklus would be the movement from equilibrium to one extreme, or from one extreme back to equilibrium. Understanding halvsyklus is crucial for analyzing the behavior and characteristics of such periodic processes, enabling calculations related to frequency, period, and phase.
