Haloarchéer are a class of microorganisms belonging to the domain Archaea. They are characterized by their ability to thrive in extremely saline environments, such as salt lakes, salt flats, and salterns. The name "haloarchéer" itself derives from the Greek words "hals" meaning salt and "archaios" meaning ancient, reflecting their habitat and ancient lineage.

These extremophiles are typically obligate halophiles, meaning they absolutely require high salt concentrations for growth. Their cellular structures and metabolic processes are adapted to withstand osmotic stress. For example, they accumulate high concentrations of potassium ions or compatible organic solutes within their cells to balance the external salt concentration, preventing dehydration.

Haloarchéer exhibit a remarkable diversity in their morphology and metabolism. Many are rod-shaped or coccoid, and some possess flagella for motility. They are often colored red or orange due to the presence of bacteriorhodopsin, a light-sensitive pigment that allows them to perform a type of photosynthesis using sunlight for energy production. This pigment gives highly saline waters a distinctive pink or reddish hue.

Their metabolic pathways can vary, with some being chemoheterotrophic, obtaining energy from organic compounds, while others are photoautotrophic, producing their own food using light. Haloarchéer play important roles in the biogeochemical cycles of salt-rich ecosystems and are utilized in various biotechnological applications, including the production of enzymes, biopolymers, and as sources of pigments.
