halkiukalon

Halkidiki or Halkiukalon is a peninsula located in the regional unit of Chalkidiki, Greece. It extends from the mouth of the Ouranos Gulf in the north to the Thermaic Gulf in the south, and is bound by the Aegean Sea to the east. The peninsula is a part of the larger region of Chalkidiki, which is also known for its numerous islands.

The name "Halkidiki" is derived from the Greek word "Chalkides," an ancient Greek city that is now the site of the modern city of Polygyros. The city was an important center of industry and trade in ancient times, particularly in the Byzantine era. Today, Halkidiki is a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, natural harbors, and historic sites.

The region is home to a number of ancient ruins and historic sites, including the antiquities of Mottyle and Staura. The Hypomone Triumphal Monument is also located in the area, and dates back to the 2nd century BC. In addition to its historical significance, Halkidiki is also a major agricultural producer, with crops including wheat, grapes, and wine.

The town of Ierissos on the peninsula, formerly known as Leukomiletos, is especially significant as a notable founding place of St Euthymios the Younger, one of the most important figures in Byzantine monasticism. These islands and mainland regions specifically have either regional character in regards to these agriculture landscapes rising economic contribution, infamous ethic damages.
