Hafsbotnfræði is the Icelandic term for seafloor mapping or bathymetry. It is the scientific study of the underwater topography of the oceans, seas, and lakes. This field involves measuring the depth of water bodies and creating detailed maps of the submerged landforms. These landforms include features like plains, mountains, valleys, and canyons that exist beneath the water's surface.

The primary goal of hafsbotnfræði is to understand the shape and composition of the ocean floor. This knowledge is crucial for various applications, including navigation, offshore resource exploration (such as oil, gas, and minerals), marine conservation efforts, and understanding geological processes like plate tectonics and volcanic activity. Historically, seafloor mapping was a painstaking process involving lead lines. Modern techniques, however, predominantly utilize sonar technology, particularly multibeam echo sounders, which can cover wide swaths of the seafloor and provide high-resolution data.
