Haavareaktio refers to the physiological and cellular processes that occur in response to tissue damage, such as a wound. This complex cascade of events is designed to stop bleeding, clear debris, and initiate the repair process.

The initial phase of the haavareaktio involves hemostasis, where blood vessels constrict to reduce blood flow and platelets aggregate to form a plug. This is followed by inflammation, characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain. During this stage, immune cells like neutrophils and macrophages are recruited to the site to remove bacteria and damaged tissue.

Following inflammation, the proliferative phase begins. Fibroblasts produce collagen, a protein that provides structural support to the healing tissue. New blood vessels form, a process called angiogenesis, to supply nutrients and oxygen to the regenerating area. Epithelial cells migrate to cover the wound surface, forming new skin.

The final stage is remodeling, where the newly formed tissue strengthens and reorganizes. Collagen is rearranged, and the scar tissue becomes less prominent over time. The duration and success of the haavareaktio depend on various factors, including the size and depth of the wound, the presence of infection, and the individual's overall health. Complications can arise if the process is disrupted, leading to delayed healing or excessive scarring.
