Hypertyroidism, also known as an overactive thyroid, is a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone. This gland, located in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, the process by which the body converts food into energy. When there is an excess of thyroid hormone, the body's functions speed up, leading to a range of symptoms.

Common signs of hypertyroidism include unintended weight loss despite an increased appetite, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, anxiety, and tremors, particularly in the hands. Individuals may also experience increased sensitivity to heat, changes in bowel patterns, and disruptions in menstrual cycles for women. Muscle weakness and fatigue can also be present, which might seem counterintuitive given the overall acceleration of bodily processes.

The most frequent cause of hypertyroidism is Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, stimulating it to produce too much hormone. Other causes include nodules on the thyroid gland that overproduce hormones or inflammation of the thyroid, known as thyroiditis.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, blood tests to measure thyroid hormone levels, and sometimes imaging tests like an ultrasound or radioactive iodine uptake scan. Treatment aims to reduce the amount of thyroid hormone produced and can include antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy to destroy excess thyroid cells, or surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to prevent complications and improve quality of life.
