The primary parts of a driver unit typically include a magnet system, a voice coil, and a diaphragm. The magnet system provides the necessary magnetic field. The voice coil is a coil of wire attached to the diaphragm, and when an electrical current passes through it, it generates a changing magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnet. This interaction causes the voice coil and the attached diaphragm to move back and forth. The diaphragm, often made of paper, plastic, or metal, is the surface that vibrates and pushes the air, thereby generating sound waves.

Common examples include woofers for low frequencies, midranges for mid-range frequencies, and tweeters for high frequencies. These are often combined in multi-way speaker systems to reproduce a wider spectrum of sound accurately.
