Häviöominaisuutta, often translated as lossiness or lossy characteristic, refers to a property of certain data compression techniques where some data is discarded to achieve a smaller file size. This is in contrast to lossless compression, where all original data can be perfectly reconstructed.

In lossy compression, the aim is to remove information that is considered less perceptible to human senses, particularly vision and hearing. For example, in image compression (like JPEG), subtle color variations or details that the human eye might not easily distinguish can be removed. In audio compression (like MP3), sounds that are masked by louder sounds or are outside the typical range of human hearing can be eliminated.

The advantage of häviöominaisuutta is significantly greater compression ratios compared to lossless methods, leading to much smaller file sizes. This is crucial for applications like streaming media, digital photography, and online video, where bandwidth and storage space are often limited.
