gülümsemesi

Gülümsemesi is a traditional folk dance and a form of self-defense in East Thrace, Turkey. It is characterized by amazing physical feats, reminding one of some athletes' grappling and acrobatic movements. The dance is performed by professional women mostly in rural areas of Turkey.

There are different versions of gülümsemesi, and they are all highly stylized with dramatic postures and disciplines. Performers incorporate movements such as striking, holding, and knocking down an opponent into their dance routine. It can be performed as solo or in groups, and some routines may even incorporate clubbing, wrestling, or sand bag swinging.

The dance has strong physical implications and gymnasts are a requirement of performers. Gulumesmesi is seen as an indicator of fertility, prosperity, and martial prowess. People traditionally do this dance during New Year's Eve celebrations in Istanbul which was the previous capital of Turkey.
