Gyyroskoopit, or gyroscopes, are devices that measure or maintain orientation and angular velocity. A simple mechanical gyroscope consists of a spinning wheel or rotor mounted on a gimbal system, which allows it to tilt freely in any direction. Due to the principle of angular momentum, the spinning rotor tends to maintain its orientation in space regardless of the motion of its support. This property makes gyroscopes useful for a variety of applications requiring stable reference points.

Modern gyroscopes are often electronic and do not rely on a spinning rotor. These include MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) gyroscopes, which use vibrating structures to detect rotation, and fiber optic gyroscopes (FOGs) and ring laser gyroscopes (RLGs), which utilize the interference of light beams to measure rotation. These electronic gyroscopes are smaller, more robust, and consume less power than traditional mechanical ones.

Applications for gyroscopes are widespread. They are crucial in navigation systems for aircraft, ships, and spacecraft, helping to determine and maintain direction and altitude. In consumer electronics, gyroscopes are found in smartphones and tablets, enabling features like screen rotation, augmented reality applications, and motion-controlled gaming. They are also used in camera stabilization systems to counteract hand tremors, in robotics for precise movement control, and in inertial measurement units (IMUs) to combine gyroscope data with accelerometer data for more comprehensive motion sensing.
