guojia

Guojia, often written in pinyin as guójia, is the Mandarin Chinese term for a country or nation. It is composed of two characters: guó (state, country) and jiā (home, family). Together, they denote a sovereign political entity such as a nation-state.

In modern usage, 国家 is employed in formal and official contexts. It appears in expressions like 国家主席 (head of state), 国家机构 (state organs), and 国家安全 (national security). The term is frequently contrasted with shorter forms like 国, which also means country but can carry a lighter or more general sense, and with 邦, a more literary or historical word for a state.
