Gunfire refers to the discharge of a firearm, producing a projectile and a distinctive audible report. It encompasses a wide range of devices, including pistols, rifles, shotguns, and machine guns, as well as larger artillery in some contexts. The term is used in military, law enforcement, sport, and civilian settings to describe shots that are intentional or accidental.

Physically, the discharge creates a muzzle blast as high-pressure gases exit the barrel. If the projectile is supersonic, a sonic crack accompanies the muzzle report. A muzzle flash may occur, especially in dim conditions. Bullet speeds vary by weapon and ammunition, from roughly 200–300 meters per second for some calibers to over 1,000 meters per second for high-velocity rounds, with most common rifle rounds in the 700–900 m/s range. The overall noise at the firing point typically exceeds 140 decibels.

Types of fire include single-shot, semi-automatic (one shot per trigger pull with automatic cycling), and fully automatic (continuous fire while the trigger is held). Some weapons also fire in controlled bursts. Fire can be deliberate or accidental and is used in contexts such as sport shooting, hunting, self-defense, and military or law enforcement operations.

Detection, safety, and regulation: Gunfire is monitored by authorities and, in some areas, by civilian detection systems that use acoustic sensors or video analysis. Hearing protection is important to prevent long-term damage. Safe handling, storage, and adherence to laws and regulations governing licensing, background checks, and ammunition are essential to reduce risk and harm.
