A gritkamer, also known as a grit chamber or grit trap, is a component of a wastewater treatment plant designed to remove coarse mineral material, such as sand, gravel, and other heavy detritus, from raw sewage. The primary purpose of a gritkamer is to protect downstream treatment equipment, such as pumps, aeration systems, and settling tanks, from abrasion and clogging.

Grit chambers function based on the principle of sedimentation. As wastewater flows through the chamber, its velocity is reduced, creating conditions where heavier inorganic particles settle out while lighter organic materials remain suspended. This velocity reduction is typically achieved by widening the channel or by introducing aeration in a controlled manner.

There are several types of grit chambers, including horizontal flow, aerated, and vortex types. Horizontal flow grit chambers are the simplest, relying on gravity and a slow flow rate. Aerated grit chambers use air diffusers to create a spiral flow pattern, which helps to keep organic solids in suspension while allowing grit to settle. Vortex grit chambers utilize centrifugal force to separate grit from the wastewater.

The settled grit is periodically removed from the grit chamber and typically dewatered before disposal, often in a landfill. Proper removal and disposal of grit are essential to prevent odors and to minimize the volume of material requiring disposal. Grit removal is a crucial preliminary step in the wastewater treatment process, contributing to the overall efficiency and longevity of the treatment facility.
