Grammatikos (Greek: γραμματικός) is a term meaning “teacher of letters” or “grammar,” and in ancient and medieval contexts it designated a teacher or scholar who specialized in grammar and language study. The word derives from Greek grammátikos, from gram(ma) “letter” with the suffix -ikos.

In classical Greece and the Hellenistic world, a grammatikos referred to an instructor of reading, writing, and grammar, often part of the education that prepared students for rhetoric. The focus was on the rules of the language, syntax, and the correct interpretation of texts, including poetry and prose.

In the Roman world, the Latin equivalent grammaticus became the standard title for a teacher of grammar. Grammatici formed part of the early educational sequence before the student advanced to logic or rhetoric in the trivium. The tradition produced influential grammatical handbooks, notably Donatus the Grammarian with his Ars minor and Ars maior, and Priscian of Milenius with the Institutiones grammaticae, works that shaped medieval schooling and philology.

In Byzantium and medieval Europe, grammatici continued as recognized teachers of grammar, teaching Latin and, at times, Greek, and guiding students in the reading and interpretation of classical and sacred texts. The role persisted even as curricula and institutions evolved, though the exact functions and titles varied by period.

Today, grammatikos is mainly used in scholarly discussions as the Greek source of the term grammaticus, reflecting the historical role of grammar teachers in classical education. The lineage underpins the English words grammar and grammarian, and the concept remains central to the study of ancient and medieval education.
