A gradiëntveld is a vector field that at each point in space assigns a vector representing the direction and rate of the greatest rate of increase of a scalar function. In simpler terms, if you have a scalar function, like temperature across a room, the gradiëntveld at any point tells you which way to move to get to a warmer spot the fastest, and how quickly the temperature changes in that direction.

Mathematically, for a scalar function denoted by $f$, its gradiënt is represented by the nabla operator ($\nabla$) acting on $f$, written as $\nabla f$. The resulting vector, $\nabla f$, has components that are the partial derivatives of $f$ with respect to each spatial coordinate. For instance, in three dimensions, if $f(x, y, z)$ is a scalar function, then $\nabla f = (\frac{\partial f}{\partial x}, \frac{\partial f}{\partial y}, \frac{\partial f}{\partial z})$. The magnitude of this gradiënt vector indicates the steepness of the scalar function, while its direction points towards the steepest ascent.
