Gombafonalhálózat, often referred to as mycelium, is the vegetative part of a fungus. It consists of a network of fine, thread-like filaments called hyphae. These hyphae grow and spread through the substrate, which can be soil, wood, or other organic matter, searching for nutrients. The mycelial network is responsible for absorbing dissolved organic compounds from the environment, effectively decomposing dead or decaying material.

In many cases, the mycelium is hidden from view, existing beneath the surface of the soil or within the host organism. The visible part of a fungus that we commonly recognize, such as a mushroom, is actually the fruiting body, which is a reproductive structure produced by the mycelium. This fruiting body is responsible for producing spores, which can then disperse to form new mycelial networks.

Mycelial networks play a crucial role in ecosystems. They are essential decomposers, breaking down complex organic matter and returning vital nutrients to the soil, thereby supporting plant growth. Furthermore, some mycelial networks form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, known as mycorrhizae. In these associations, the fungus helps the plant absorb water and minerals, while the plant provides the fungus with sugars produced through photosynthesis.
