Glyseroliyksikkö, also known as a glycerol unit or glyceryl group, refers to the fundamental three-carbon backbone of glycerol, a simple polyol compound. This unit is characterized by its three hydroxyl (-OH) groups attached to a propane chain. In biological and chemical contexts, the glycerol unit often serves as a structural component, particularly in lipids.

The most common association with the glycerol unit is its role in forming triglycerides, the primary form of fat storage in animals and plants. In a triglyceride molecule, three fatty acid chains are esterified to the three hydroxyl groups of a glycerol molecule, creating a stable and energy-dense compound.
