This designation is crucial for ensuring that two threaded components can properly engage and form a secure connection. Different gjengetypes are designed for various applications, materials, and load requirements.

The most common classification of gjengetype is based on the thread's angle and the pitch, which is the distance between adjacent threads. For example, the Unified Thread Standard (UTS) and the Metric Thread Standard (ISO metric) are two major systems. UTS uses inches for measurements and has specific thread series like UNC (Coarse) and UNF (Fine). Metric threads, on the other hand, are measured in millimeters, with a standard designation including the nominal diameter and the pitch (e.g., M10 x 1.5 indicates a 10mm diameter bolt with a 1.5mm pitch).
