giardiase
Giardiasis is an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite called Giardia duodenalis. This parasite is found throughout the world in feces, and people can become infected by swallowing the parasite. Common sources of infection include contaminated food or water, and contact with infected individuals or animals. The parasite exists in two forms: a cyst, which is resistant to environmental conditions, and a trophozoite, which is the active feeding and reproductive stage.
Symptoms of giardiasis can vary and may include diarrhea, gas, greasy stools, stomach cramps, nausea, and dehydration.
Diagnosis is usually made by examining a stool sample for the presence of Giardia cysts or trophozoites.
