Gesällbrev, literally a journeyman’s certificate, is a credential awarded to a skilled craftsworker who has completed an apprenticeship in a defined craft. The certificate attests that the holder has met the required training and examinations and is authorized to practice the craft as a gesäll (journeyman) within a guild or recognized professional framework. In Sweden the term gesällbrev is commonly used; in other Nordic countries similar certificates exist under different names and arrangements.

Historically, gesällbrev arose within the medieval guild system. A craftsman would complete a lengthy apprenticeship, pass a final examination or project, and receive the gesällbrev from the local guild. The document typically named the craft, the apprentice, the issuing guild, and the date, and bore the guild seal. With such a credential, a journeyman could work legally in the town or region, travel to gain experience, and take on apprentices. To reach master status, the journeyman would later seek a mästarbrev or equivalent after meeting further requirements, such as demonstrating a substantial work sample or establishing a workshop.

Today the use of gesällbrev varies by country and trade. In Sweden it remains a recognized credential in traditional crafts and regulated trades, while in many places the legal authority once held by guilds has faded and professional qualifications have become formal licenses or certifications. In Norway and some other countries a similar step is known as a svennebrev; the path to full mastery typically involves additional examination, business training, and the establishment of a workshop. Gesällbrev thus functions as a milestone in the progression from apprentice to skilled practitioner.
