geopende

Geopende is a form of the Dutch verb openen, used as an attributive past participle adjective meaning opened. It modifies a noun and appears before a definite noun, as in de geopende deur or het geopende raam. The form is derived from the past participle geopend, with an -ende ending added to agree with the noun it describes. In practice, geopende is used to indicate that something has already been opened.

Geopende is primarily an attributive adjective, not a predicative one. When describing a subject after a linking verb, the standard construction uses geopend: De deur is geopend (The door has been opened). The attributive form geopende cannot normally replace the predicative participle in that position.

Grammatical agreement follows common Dutch rules for adjectives in definite contexts. With singular definite nouns, the form remains geopende (de geopende deur, het geopende raam). With plural definite nouns, it becomes de geopende deuren. The word does not change for gender beyond what is required by the definite article and number.

In usage, geopende frequently appears in descriptive or narrative prose, signage, and technical writing to convey that an object has been opened. It is less common in everyday speech than the simpler predicative form geopend, but it remains a natural and correct option when the author intends to emphasize the state of having been opened as part of a noun phrase.
