Generaatori, in Italian, refers to devices that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. They range from portable units used for temporary or emergency power to large stationary systems that supply homes, facilities, or industries. The term covers a variety of designs intended to produce electricity from a mechanical prime mover such as an internal combustion engine or a turbine.

The operating principle is electromagnetic induction. A rotor driven by the prime mover creates a moving magnetic field that induces current in stationary windings. Most generators produce alternating current (AC); direct current (DC) generators exist for specialized applications. The electrical output is managed by a control system that regulates voltage, frequency, and protection.

Main types are categorized by energy source, application, and configuration. By energy source, common examples include diesel generators, gasoline/petrol generators, natural gas or propane generators, and steam or gas-turbine sets for larger installations. Solar-based systems with battery storage and inverters are sometimes referred to as generators in informal language, though they operate differently from conventional engines.

Transfer equipment, such as automatic or manual switches, allows the load to shift to the generator when needed.
