gedatet

Gedatet is a German form that some speakers encounter as the past participle of the verb datieren, meaning to date something or to assign a date. In standard German, however, the past participle of datieren is datiert, and gedatet is generally regarded as nonstandard or a misspelling. The form may appear in informal speech or in texts influenced by the pattern of other verbs that take a ge- prefix, but it is not accepted in formal writing.

Datieren is used in archival, bibliographic, historical, and scientific contexts to indicate that a document or object has been dated or that its age has been established. Common constructions include Der Bericht ist auf 1999 datiert or Das Dokument ist datiert auf den 3. März 1990. The preferred term today is datiert; gedatet appears only in nonstandard or informal usage.

Etymology: datieren derives from Datum (date) with the verb-forming suffix -ieren. For most -ieren verbs in German, the participle does not take the ge- prefix, yielding datiert rather than gedatet.
