It is a descriptive term combining "gastro" meaning stomach and "esophageal" meaning relating to the esophagus. When something is described as gastroösofageaalne, it typically involves problems that affect the junction between these two organs or conditions that manifest in both.

The most common condition associated with the term is gastroesophageal reflux disease, often abbreviated as GERD. GERD occurs when stomach acid or, occasionally, stomach content, flows back into the esophagus. The esophagus is a tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. Treatment strategies vary depending on the severity and frequency of symptoms, and may include lifestyle modifications, medications to reduce stomach acid, or surgery in some cases.
