Historically in Sweden, gaskydd was a central element of civil defense. During the mid-20th century, households, workplaces, and municipal authorities sometimes maintained gas protection gear and planned for sealed shelters and air filtration. The term appears in government reports and civil defense manuals describing preparations against chemical threats.

Common components are respirators or gas masks with replacement filters, protective clothing, gloves, and footwear, as well as decontamination facilities and shelter options with filtered air.
