ganglionet

Ganglionet refers to a benign cyst that forms on a nerve, specifically on the sheath of a nerve. These cysts are also known as neurogenic cysts or peripheral nerve cysts. They are most commonly found in the extremities, such as the hands and feet, but can occur elsewhere along the nervous system. Ganglionet cysts are typically slow-growing and filled with a gelatinous or clear fluid.

The exact cause of ganglionet formation is not fully understood, but they are believed to arise from a degeneration or herniation of the nerve sheath. Trauma to the nerve or inflammation may play a role in their development. Symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the cyst. Small cysts may be asymptomatic, while larger ones can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected area due to pressure on the nerve.

Diagnosis of a ganglionet usually involves a physical examination and imaging studies, such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to visualize the cyst and its relationship to the nerve. Treatment is generally not required for asymptomatic cysts. However, if the cyst is causing pain or functional impairment, options may include observation, aspiration of the fluid, or surgical removal of the cyst. Recurrence is possible after treatment.
