Galleries (galeritë in Albanian) are spaces designed to display art and related objects. They may be commercial venues that represent and sell works, public or non-profit institutions that organize exhibitions for education and cultural enrichment, or online platforms that present works remotely. The term can apply to small private studios with display space as well as large specialist institutions.

Types of galleries include commercial art galleries that represent artists and mount temporary exhibitions; public galleries funded by states, municipalities, or foundations; corporate galleries used by companies to display collections; and online galleries that operate primarily on the internet. Some spaces function as hybrid models, combining sales with educational programming and public access.

History and development: The concept emerged in early modern Europe with private rooms and cabinets used to display collections, evolving into dedicated exhibition spaces in the 17th through 19th centuries, and expanding further in the 20th century with the growth of the art market and museum-driven practice. In the 21st century, online galleries and temporary or pop-up spaces have broadened access, facilitated cross-border exchange, and encouraged experimental presentation.

Functions and operations: Galleries curate and install exhibitions, arrange lighting and display, manage provenance and sales, and communicate with audiences through catalogs, openings, and promotional activity. They often organize educational programs, talks, and collaborations that connect artists with collectors, curators, critics, and the public.

Regional context: In Albania and other Albanian-speaking areas, galeritë contribute to the cultural landscape by hosting local contemporary artists alongside international exhibitions, supporting cultural exchange and public engagement with the arts.
