Galaksiytimistä, commonly known as galactic nuclei or galactic centers, are the central regions of galaxies. These areas are often characterized by a significantly higher density of stars, gas, and dust compared to the rest of the galaxy. The most striking feature of many galactic nuclei is the presence of a supermassive black hole at their very heart. These black holes can have masses millions to billions of times that of our Sun.

The activity within a galactic nucleus is directly influenced by the central supermassive black hole. When matter, such as gas and stars, falls towards the black hole, it forms an accretion disk. Friction within this disk heats the material to extremely high temperatures, causing it to emit intense radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to X-rays and gamma rays. This phenomenon is responsible for the classification of active galactic nuclei (AGN), which are some of the most luminous objects in the universe.

Even in galaxies without active nuclei, the central region hosts a dense stellar population, often appearing as a bright bulge. The dynamics and evolution of galaxies are strongly tied to their central regions, with processes occurring in the galactic nucleus capable of influencing star formation and the overall structure of the galaxy. Studying galactic nuclei provides crucial insights into the formation, evolution, and fundamental physics of galaxies.
