Gadoversetamide is a gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to enhance tissue contrast and improve the detection and characterization of lesions. It is a linear gadolinium chelate of a diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid–type ligand and is administered intravenously. As a GBCA, it shortens T1 relaxation times, producing brighter signals on T1-weighted images and helping to delineate abnormal tissues, vascular structures, and pathology.

Clinical use of gadoversetamide includes imaging of the brain, spine, liver, and other organs, as well as dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI studies for vascular assessment. It is employed to improve visualization of tumors, inflammation, and other abnormalities where enhanced contrast improves diagnostic accuracy.

Safety and regulatory considerations follow those of gadolinium-based contrast agents in general. Gadoversetamide can be associated with nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with severe renal impairment, and risk is higher with linear agents. Clinical guidelines emphasize assessing renal function before administration and avoiding use in high-risk patients when possible; if a GBCA is necessary, use the lowest effective dose and monitor the patient. Common adverse effects are typically mild and may include headache, nausea, and injection-site reactions, with rare hypersensitivity. Elimination is primarily renal, and reduced kidney function can slow clearance and increase gadolinium exposure.
