Füstérzékelő, also known as a smoke detector, is a device that detects smoke, usually as an indicator of fire. Smoke detectors are a common safety feature in homes and public buildings. They work by sensing smoke particles in the air. There are two main types of smoke detectors: photoelectric and ionization.

Photoelectric smoke detectors use a beam of light. In a normal environment, the light beam passes by a sensor. When smoke enters the detection chamber, it scatters the light beam, causing it to hit the sensor and trigger an alarm. These are generally more effective at detecting smoldering fires that produce larger smoke particles.

Ionization smoke detectors use a small amount of radioactive material to ionize the air in a small chamber, creating a continuous electrical current. When smoke particles enter the chamber, they disrupt this current, triggering the alarm. Ionization detectors are typically more responsive to fast-flaming fires that produce smaller smoke particles.

Many modern smoke detectors combine both photoelectric and ionization technologies to offer broader detection capabilities. Smoke detectors are typically powered by batteries or hardwired into the building's electrical system, often with battery backup. Regular testing and maintenance, including battery replacement, are crucial to ensure their proper functioning. Alarms triggered by smoke detectors are designed to be loud enough to alert occupants to potential danger, allowing them time to evacuate.
