Fülzúgás, also known as sinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses, which are the hollow spaces in the skull that are connected to the nasal cavity. This condition can cause symptoms such as facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, nasal discharge, and reduced sense of smell. Sinusitis can be acute, lasting up to three weeks, or chronic, lasting more than 12 weeks. It is often caused by infections, such as viral or bacterial, but can also be due to allergies, deviated septum, or other structural issues.

The sinuses are located in the facial bones and are divided into four pairs: the frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, and sphenoid sinuses. Each pair drains into the nasal cavity through small openings. When the sinuses become inflamed, these openings can become blocked, leading to the symptoms of sinusitis.

Treatment for sinusitis depends on the underlying cause. For acute sinusitis, over-the-counter pain relievers and decongestants may be used. For more severe cases, antibiotics may be prescribed. For chronic sinusitis, surgery may be necessary to correct structural issues. Allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps can also contribute to sinusitis symptoms and may require additional treatment.

Prevention involves maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants, and managing allergies. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate hydration can also help prevent sinusitis. If symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
