Fülgyulladás, medically known as otitis, refers to inflammation of the ear. It most commonly affects the middle ear (otitis media), but can also involve the outer ear (otitis externa) or inner ear (otitis interna).

Otitis media is frequently seen in children and is often caused by a bacterial or viral infection, commonly following a cold or upper respiratory infection. The infection leads to fluid buildup behind the eardrum, causing pain, fever, and temporary hearing loss. In some cases, the eardrum may rupture.

Otitis externa, also known as swimmer's ear, is an infection of the ear canal, often caused by water trapped in the ear which creates a moist environment for bacteria or fungi to grow. Symptoms include itching, redness, swelling, and pain when the ear is touched or pulled.

Otitis interna, or labyrinthitis, is less common and involves inflammation of the inner ear. This can lead to dizziness, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and hearing loss. It is often associated with viral infections.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical examination, including looking into the ear with an otoscope. Treatment varies depending on the type and severity of the inflammation and may include antibiotics, ear drops, pain relievers, or observation. Preventing ear infections can involve good hygiene practices, avoiding irritants, and prompt treatment of colds.
