Förädlingsvärde, often translated as value added, is an economic concept referring to the increase in the value of a good or service as it passes through the production process. It represents the difference between the selling price of a product or service and the cost of the intermediate goods and services used to produce it. In essence, it measures the contribution of labor and capital in transforming raw materials or semi-finished goods into a more valuable final product.

This concept is crucial in national accounting, particularly in the calculation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). GDP can be measured using the expenditure approach, the income approach, or the value-added approach. The value-added approach sums up the value added by all producers in the economy. By calculating the value added at each stage of production, economists can avoid double-counting the value of intermediate goods. For example, if a baker buys flour for 10 SEK and sells bread for 30 SEK, the value added by the baker is 20 SEK. This 20 SEK contributes to the GDP.

Förädlingsvärde is also used to analyze the productivity and profitability of different industries and companies. A higher förädlingsvärde often indicates greater efficiency and higher margins. It helps policymakers understand where economic activity is concentrated and where interventions might be most effective. Different sectors of an economy will exhibit varying levels of förädlingsvärde based on their complexity, technology, and market positioning.
