Förvärmare, often translated as preheater, is a device used to raise the temperature of a fluid or gas before it enters another process. The principle behind a förvärmare is heat transfer. Typically, a hot fluid or gas, often a waste product from another process, is used as the heating medium. In power generation, förvärmare are frequently used to preheat combustion air or feedwater. Preheating combustion air before it enters the furnace leads to more complete combustion, thus increasing boiler efficiency and reducing fuel consumption. Similarly, preheating feedwater reduces the amount of energy required to convert it into steam. In chemical industries, förvärmare can be used to bring reactants up to the optimal temperature for a chemical reaction, leading to faster reaction rates and higher yields.
