Förformationer are a concept in geological and geotechnical engineering referring to layers of soil or rock that have undergone pre-compaction or pre-consolidation. This pre-consolidation is typically caused by the weight of overburden that was previously present but has since been removed through erosion or excavation. Understanding förformationer is crucial for accurately assessing the engineering properties of a soil or rock mass.

When overburden is removed, the underlying material, being already compressed, will exhibit different behaviors compared to normally consolidated materials. This can include increased shear strength, reduced compressibility, and a lower coefficient of consolidation. These properties are important for predicting settlement under new loads, stability of excavations, and the design of foundations.

The identification of förformationer often involves laboratory testing, such as oedometer tests, to determine the preconsolidation pressure (Pc). This pressure represents the maximum past effective stress the soil or rock has experienced. Geological investigations and borehole data can also provide clues about the presence of previously eroded overburden.
