Förefasändring is a Swedish term that translates to "phase change" or "phase transition" in English. It refers to a physical process where a substance changes from one state of matter to another. These states are typically solid, liquid, and gas, though other phases like plasma and superfluid are also considered.

The most common examples of förefasändring involve the transformations between ice, water, and steam. Melting, for instance, is the förefasändring from solid ice to liquid water, occurring at the melting point. Freezing is the reverse process, where liquid water turns into solid ice. Boiling or evaporation is the förefasändring from liquid water to gaseous steam, happening at the boiling point. Condensation is the opposite, where steam turns back into liquid water.

These changes in phase are driven by alterations in temperature and/or pressure. When energy is added to a substance, its molecules gain kinetic energy, leading to a change in state. Conversely, removing energy causes the molecules to slow down, resulting in a different phase.
