Földgázérzékelők, often translated as natural gas detectors, are devices designed to sense the presence of natural gas leaks. These sensors are crucial safety components in homes, businesses, and industrial settings where natural gas is used for heating, cooking, or other processes. They work by detecting specific chemical compounds within natural gas, such as methane.

There are several types of natural gas detectors, with catalytic combustion and semiconductor sensors being among the most common. Catalytic sensors detect combustible gases by oxidizing them at a heated element, causing a change in electrical resistance that triggers an alarm. Semiconductor sensors, on the other hand, utilize a metal oxide semiconductor material that changes its electrical conductivity in the presence of certain gases. Electrochemical sensors are also used, though they are more common for detecting other gases like carbon monoxide.

When a natural gas detector senses a concentration of gas above a predetermined safety threshold, it activates an audible alarm, and often a visual alert, to warn occupants of a potential hazard. Early detection of a gas leak is vital to prevent explosions, fires, and asphyxiation. Regular testing and maintenance of these detectors are recommended to ensure their proper functioning and reliability. They are typically powered by mains electricity with battery backup, or can be battery-operated. Installation locations are critical, as natural gas is lighter than air and will rise, so detectors are often placed near the ceiling.
