fólksfjölda

Fólksfjöldi is the Icelandic term for the total number of people living in a defined area. It is a central concept in demography and is used in official statistics, policy planning, and everyday language to describe population size. The word combines fólk (people) with fjöldi (multitude or number). The genitive form is fólksfjölda, used in constructions such as fjölda fólks, meaning "the number of people."

Usage and data: Population figures are collected and published by national statistical offices, notably Statistics Iceland (Hagstofa Íslands). Figures are commonly given as mid-year population, census counts, or estimates for different points in time. They may be disaggregated by age, sex, and settlement and used to calculate density and dependency measures.

Dynamics: Population size changes due to births, deaths, and net migration; in smaller states migration can have a large impact. In demographic analysis, the population is distinguished from people temporarily abroad or tourists.
