Fundoplikaatiota, also known as fundoplication, is a surgical procedure used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions that cause acid reflux. The procedure involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach (fundus) around the lower part of the esophagus, creating a barrier that prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus.

Fundoplication is typically performed using one of two techniques: the Nissen fundoplication or the Toupet fundoplication. In the Nissen fundoplication, the fundus is wrapped around the esophagus and secured with sutures. In the Toupet fundoplication, the fundus is wrapped around the esophagus and the gastroesophageal junction is divided, allowing the stomach to move upward and forward.

Fundoplication is considered a definitive treatment for GERD, as it addresses the underlying cause of the condition by creating a physical barrier between the stomach and esophagus. The procedure is generally well-tolerated and has a high success rate, with many patients experiencing significant relief from symptoms.

However, fundoplication is not without risks. Complications can occur, such as bleeding, infection, and narrowing of the esophagus. Additionally, the procedure may not be suitable for all patients, particularly those with certain medical conditions or a history of previous abdominal surgeries.

Fundoplication is typically performed on an outpatient basis, with patients going home the same day as the surgery. Recovery time varies, but most patients can resume a normal diet within a few days of the procedure. Physical activity and exercise should be avoided for several weeks to allow the surgical site to heal properly.
