Fundamentering is the process of designing and constructing the foundation of a building or other structure. The foundation's purpose is to safely transfer the loads from the superstructure to the underlying soil or rock. The type of foundation chosen depends on various factors, including the soil conditions, the weight of the structure, and the intended use of the building.

Shallow foundations are the most common type, resting on the ground surface or at a relatively shallow depth. Examples include strip foundations, which are continuous strips of concrete supporting load-bearing walls, and pad foundations, which are individual concrete bases supporting columns. Raft foundations, also known as mat foundations, are large slabs of concrete that cover the entire footprint of a building, distributing the load over a wide area. This is often used when soil bearing capacity is low.

Deep foundations are used when the ground near the surface is not strong enough to support the structure. These foundations extend significantly into the ground to reach more stable soil or rock layers. Piles are common deep foundation elements, driven or bored into the ground. They can be made of concrete, steel, or timber. Piers are similar to piles but are typically larger in diameter and are often constructed by excavating and filling with concrete.

The design of a foundation involves geotechnical investigations to understand the soil properties. Engineers then calculate the required size and depth of the foundation to ensure it can withstand the anticipated loads and settlement. Proper fundamentering is crucial for the long-term stability and safety of any construction project.
