Functiongerund is a term used in linguistic discussions to describe a particular use of the English gerund form -ing that names function, purpose, or role rather than an action itself. It is not a standard category in all grammars, but is employed by some analysts in functional or typological descriptions to highlight how gerund phrases can function as labels for how a thing is used.

Morphology and syntax. Functiongerunds are formed by the usual gerund process from a verb, yielding an -ing noun form. The distinguishing factor is not the form itself but its semantic role: a functiongerund tends to appear in predicative, attributive, or prepositional constructions that foreground function or purpose rather than the activity described by the verb. In many analyses, such a use overlaps with ordinary deverbal nominals, but the emphasis is on naming a function.

Cutting is the tool’s main function. In sentences like “We studied the function of the method: cutting,” the gerund names the intended use rather than reporting a concrete action.
