fuktkällan

Fuktkällan is a Swedish term that literally means the “moisture source.” In Swedish-language texts it is used as a general concept to refer to any origin of moisture that affects a material, a space, or an environment. It is not a single place or entity, but a way of identifying where dampness comes from.

In building science and maintenance, fuktkällor are important to identify because moisture can lead to damage and health issues. Common sources include exterior water intrusion (leaks from roofs, walls, or cladding), groundwater or ground moisture that rises by capillary action, indoor activities (cooking, showering, drying clothes), and plumbing leaks. Condensation due to temperature differences and inadequate ventilation also creates moisture. Recognizing the fuktkälla helps determine appropriate mitigation measures.

Measurement and assessment of moisture sources often involve monitoring relative humidity and dew point, using moisture meters or hygrometers, and conducting visual inspections for signs of damp, mold, or water staining. In some cases, a moisture balance analysis is used to estimate inputs and losses of moisture within a building or system.

Mitigation strategies focus on eliminating or reducing the fuktkälla and improving a drying environment. This can include fixing leaks, improving drainage around foundations, installing vapor barriers and insulation, ensuring proper ventilation, and using dehumidification when necessary.

Outside construction, the term can also appear in agriculture to describe sources of soil moisture or in meteorology to discuss humidity inputs to air masses. Etymologically, the word combines fukt (moisture) with källa (source).
