Frumulag is a term used in Swedish to denote a layer of cells that forms part of a tissue or organ. It refers to a structural unit consisting of one or more adjacent rows or sheets of cells, serving functions such as protection, secretion, absorption, or conduction. The concept is used across disciplines including histology, anatomy, and pathology to describe the organization of cells in various tissues, notably epithelia and mucosal linings, but also in neural and glandular tissues.

In epithelia, frumulag can describe both simple (single-layer) epithelia and stratified (multilayer) epithelia. In the nervous system, distinct cortical or layered arrangements of neurons may be described as separate frumulag. The composition and thickness of a frumulag are influenced by development, mechanical forces, and local signaling, and these factors determine properties such as barrier function, transport, and intercellular communication.
