Frontoethmoidectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat certain types of nasal and sinus diseases. It involves the removal of diseased tissue from the frontal sinuses and the ethmoid sinuses. These sinuses are air-filled cavities located within the bones of the skull. The frontal sinuses are situated above the eyes, and the ethmoid sinuses are located between the eyes and behind the nose.

The primary indications for a frontoethmoidectomy include chronic sinusitis that is unresponsive to medical management, nasal polyps, and certain tumors of the nasal cavity or sinuses. It can also be performed to address complications of sinus infections, such as orbital cellulitis or abscesses. The procedure is typically performed endoscopically, meaning that a small, flexible camera (endoscope) and specialized surgical instruments are inserted through the nostrils. This minimally invasive approach allows for precise visualization and removal of diseased tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding structures.

During the surgery, the surgeon accesses the frontal and ethmoid sinuses through the nasal passages. They carefully remove inflamed or infected tissue, polyps, or tumors. The goal is to create adequate drainage pathways for the sinuses, improve ventilation, and preserve normal sinus function. Post-operative care usually involves nasal saline irrigations and follow-up appointments to monitor healing and prevent recurrence. Complications, though uncommon, can include bleeding, infection, or damage to surrounding structures such as the eyes.
